NAFEMS European Conference on Multiphysics Simulation 2018
Linz Center of Mechatronics and cloudSME present together @ the NAFEMS European Conference on Multiphysics Simulation 2018 the SyMSpace Cloud Portal, a cloud-based simulation and optimization environment.
Cloud-based solutions and tools, like SyMSpace Simulation Environment by LCM, combined with the cloud portal by cloudSME, enable the usage of software-tools in the most flexible way and high transparency.
The NAFEMS European Conference takes place on the 11th & 12th October 2018 in Budapest, Hungary.
About the Cloud Portal
The cloud portal can be conneted to various cloud and HPC resources, which are free selectable, and is characterised by 4 features. It combines the features "cluster on demand", software management, user management and automated cost tracking & invoicing.
Core feature "cluster on demand"
The "cluster on demand" is a key factor of the cloud portal, it enables the master-machine to react agile and cost-efficient on the demand of individual user calculations. Each process starts with booting the master-machine that is already backed up with the required characteristics and software flavour of the user, afterwards the user can boot slaves to distribute the workload.
Master-machines, are accessible via RDP, and provide the ability to connect with a various number of slave-machines via VPN and is managed by HTCondor. The "cluster on demand", is a high performace computing infrastructure of the cloud portal and supports the distribution of computational demand of software calculations on automatically generated slaves.
The configured master can be parked, restored, destroyed or transferred to another user.
Easy software management
The software management of the cloud portal is handled by the administration, in this case LCM. The administration has full control over the generation of master-machines, its characteristics, the allocated software flavour as well as which kind of cloud or HPC resource is allocated to the individual user. Software flavour means, the software characteristics and features can be individually aligned to each user, serving their skills and requirements. Once a master is generated, it is stored in the repository of the cloud platform and can be created as often as required.
Software management also includes the Software Maintenance Cycle - the programming environment allows the continuous development and maintenance of software, its flavours and provides high agility to react on bugs or user concerns. Additionally, the users software flavour can be updated by the admin in the background.
Seamless user management
The user are classified into five different roles: admin, internal user, partner, newcomer and customer.
The admin role can manage the cloud portal and its features as well as the user management, all administration rights are reserved, in this case, for LCMs administration level.
The internal user of the cloud portal are for example employees of LCM.
The partner user role is, as the name says, reserved for LCMs partner - with extended rights.
The newcomer are user with no or low skills/experiences with the software and/or cloud portal usage.
The customer in general has experiences and skills to work with the cloud portal - this user role can have one or more flavoured software on the cloud portal.
Automated cost tracking and invoicing
The costs of using the cloud platform consist out of three factors - the first factor is the role based pricing, second are license costs and as a last resort is resource consumption of the individual user. The pricing of each user role is defined by LCM, the consumption fees are based on the resource that is demanded.
The invoices are automatically generated by the cloud portal on a monthly basis, including all relevant business data and the costs occurred in the last month. The invoice of each user can be viewed by the individual user and the admin users - to provide a transparent overview. Additionally, the user can download their invoice directly from the cloud portal.
